Description of RCE Bogota

For the construction of the RCE we matched with the Network for Environmental Education who has been working since 2003, coordinated by the Institute for Environmental Studies-ideas of the National University of Colombia. This network is part of the Colombian Environmental Training Network, which in turn belongs to the Environmental Training Network in Latin American and Caribbean.

The main objective of the Thematic Network of Environmental Education – RCE Bogota, has been promoting the public environmental education from non-formal education, understood as education for sustainability. It has been an innovative experience and a challenge, that seeks to educate the citizens of Bogota, in the environmental issues, towards achieving harmonious interactions between society and nature, in its personal life and collective, in practices such as healthy eating, recycling, responsible consumption, citizen participation, sense of belonging, and identity with the city and its public spaces, among others.

Description of Region

Colombia is located at the NW corner of South America, in the middle of the planet, on the Equator. Colombia shares the borders with 5 nations: Venezuela, Brazil, Peru, Ecuador and Panama. With some 44 million people, Colombia is the third most populous country in America, after Brazil and Mexico. Over 75% is urban population, 70% in ten major cities. Its average population density is about 41m/km2, but is distributed over the country irregularly. Colombia, being a tropical country located in the area of Ecuador has a large representation of taxonomic groups in fauna and flora typical of the area to which varieties are joined from wildlife migrations from different parts of the planet by the variety of ecosystems.

Goals and Objectives

Goals

  • To promote environmental education through interdisciplinary work of state institutions: the Ministry of National Education, the Ministry of Environment, Housing and Territorial Development, and the Botanical Garden Bogota; of education: universities, schools, and civil society: ONG, to which belong professionals from different disciplines and professions who bring different perspectives for the environment.

  • Facilitating inter-agency coordination of actions that articulate research, training and screening to the community of environmental education within the national policy of Environmental Education, the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development, Sustainable Development Goals and THE Global Action Program

  • To contribute to the development of a sustainable society by promoting integration and cooperation with national and international community for environmental education and teachers training to promote learning about the environment in the area of Bogota initially, but will gradually expand their activities to broader areas such as the wider urban region
